The Hon. Harvey Spiegel, Q.C. B.A., LL.B.
Harvey Spiegel was born and raised in the City of Toronto. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He attended Osgoode Hall Law School where he obtained his LL.B. in 1960. He articled with Malcolm Robb Q.C., a pre-eminent counsel of the time. After his call to the Bar with honours in 1962 he carried on a general practice in Toronto with emphasis on civil litigation and criminal law.
In 1971, in conjunction with Mendel Green Q.C., he founded the firm of Green and Spiegel where he specialized in civil litigation of all types, but with particular emphasis on personal injury, insurance and professional negligence/malpractice. He appeared as counsel at every level of the judicial system in Ontario and at the Supreme Court of Canada and various administrative tribunals.
In 1976 he was appointed Queen's Counsel.
For six years he was an instructor in civil procedure in the bar admission course.
Between 1978 and 1985, he was a member of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board of Ontario.
In 1990, he was certified as a specialist in civil litigation by the Law Society of Upper Canada.
In 1997, he was appointed a Judge of the Ontario Court, (General Division) now the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario, for the Toronto region.
As a member of the Superior Court of Justice, he participated in every aspect of the court’s work but for several years tried long, complex, civil trials. A strong advocate of dispute resolution before trial, he presided over settlement conferences in many difficult cases with a high rate of success. He authored a number of important decisions in the field of personal injury, professional negligence/malpractice and insurance law.
Mr. Spiegel has written numerous articles and participated in many continuing legal education programs as a speaker on the subject of personal injury litigation, insurance law, and the law of evidence.
Upon his retirement from the Superior Court on March 25, 2010, he joined the YorkStreet Dispute Resolution Group Inc. panel as a mediator and arbitrator.
